Fox’s Robotic Straw Men

Always on the forefront of upcoming “Downfall of Civilization,” FoxNews has posted a ridiulous column postulating that Human-Robot marriages will first become legal in 2050 . . . in Massachusetts.  This is just too rich:

Levy predicts Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize human-robot marriage.

“Massachusetts is more liberal than most other jurisdictions in the United States and has been at the forefront of same-sex marriage,” Levy said. “There’s also a lot of high-tech research there at places like MIT.”

Although roboticist Ronald Arkin at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta does not think human-robot marriages will be legal anywhere by 2050, “anything’s possible. And just because it’s not legal doesn’t mean people won’t try it,” he told LiveScience.

But wait, it gets better:

The possibility of sex with robots could prove a mixed bag for humanity. For instance, robot sex could provide an outlet for criminal sexual urges.

“If you have pedophiles and you let them use a robotic child, will that reduce the incidence of them abusing real children, or will it increase it?” Arkin asked. “I don’t think anyone has the answers for that yet — that’s where future research needs to be done.”

Pretty sick, no?  Now I’m sure we’re going to hear from the usual suspects that this is what gay marriage will lead to, just like man-on-dog sex, etc.  Because a robot, just like a dog, can demonstrate a clear emotional bond with equitable emotional, financial, and spiritual responsibilities.

Oh, wait, that’s right.  They can’t.  Same-sex HUMAN couples can.  So who’s the deviant here, really?  Those who want to freely express their love for each other in a free society, or those who can’t make the distinction between robots, dogs, and human beings?

Nice try, Fox.

  1. This is about Roomba’s, isn’t it? When I finally fork over the cash to buy the thing, I will never, EVER view it as an appropriate sexual partner.

    Although, with that hose attachment…

  2. MSNBC covered the same story.

Okay, good to know. So now we have proof of two distinct sets of idiots putting out this story. And for what purpose?

It’s still going to be cited as “evidence” against homosexuals–mark my words.
